Satan’s Greatest Lie
by Christine Egbert
To the religious leadership in first century Israel, Satan’s greatest lie was–and still is–that Yeshua was not their promised Messiah. But Israel’s “blindness” which Scripture informs us is only “in part” is not the focus of this article. Instead, I want to talk about Satan’s greatest lie to Christians. Only before I begin, I must make it clear that, unlike some in this Hebrew Roots move of God, I don’t condemn believers who are still ensnared by the unbiblical religious system enacted by Constantine. It took me twenty years to recognize Satan’s LIE (that the Torah itself is a curse) and extricate myself from man-made traditions. But make no mistake, my life in Yeshua began, not ten years ago when I returned to the old paths, but thirty years ago when I first made Israel’s Messiah, Yeshua, whom at that time I knew only as Jesus, the Lord of my life! Salvation is not by works! And work includes having all of our “doctrinal ducks” in a row. Salvation is (and always has been) through God’s grace, accessed through saving faith in Yeshua. And FAITH, biblical faith, always produces faithfulness. Thirty years ago, I placed my faith in the precious blood atonement of Yeshua, and I began changing. I am still changing today, some three decades later. He continues to transform me, by conforming me to HIS image.
Definition of Change
Scientifically speaking, change is 1 of 8 characteristics of life. Change brings growth! Change brings development. We are being transformed. How? By the renewing of our mind. For what purpose? To prove what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” (Rom 12:2)
SALVATION IS ON-GOING!
Contrary to John Calvin’s doctrine, salvation is not a single event (once saved always saved). Being born again is more like spiritual pregnancy. It’s a process! A human life begins at the moment of conception. Spiritual conception begins the moment we place our faith in Yeshua and receive His Spirit.
The natural always depicts the spiritual. (John 3:12 & 1st Corinthians 15:46 teach us this principle.) Just as our natural life begins at the moment of conception, our spiritual life begins the moment the Holy Spirit enters a believing heart. As conception begins that process known as gestation—a nine month period during which the fetus develops into a fully formed infant—spiritual conception begins spiritual “gestation”, a word defined as “the development of something over a period of time.”
1st Corinthians 15:1-2
1st Cor 15:1-2 But, brothers, I reveal to you the gospel which I preached to you, which you also received, in which you also stand, by which you also are saved, if you hold fast the Word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.”
The Greek verb “sozo”, which is translated as “are saved”, in 1st Cor 15:1-2 (…the gospel which I preached … by which also you are saved) is in the present tense, passive voice, used when something is in the process of being done. Literally, it means “by which you are being saved.” Why? Because God’s work is ongoing. All of us, who have placed our faith in Israel’s Messiah, regardless of if we call Him Yeshua or Jesus, are in gestation. We are in the process of being saved, and we will be until that glorious day when we are “changed in the twinkling of an eye,” and are clothed in our new incorruptible spiritual bodies. That’s why Paul wrote in Philippians 1:6, “I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will continue to bring it to perfection until the day of Christ Jesus.” It’s why Peter wrote that “we must add to our faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control patience, to patience godliness, to godliness brotherly love. For if these abound in us, we will be fruitful. We will make our calling, our election, sure of entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior.” (2 Peter 1:5-11)
I’ve laid all this out before I begin to caution those of us who have returned to the Hebraic roots of our most holy faith not to fall prey, as I confess I have many times in the past, to a spirit of religious pride. We know where that will lead, and we don’t want to go there. Instead, let us emulate Paul, who in never ceasing pain wished himself accursed for the sake of his (partially blinded) kinsmen according to the flesh. (Rom 9:1-4)
God, and God alone, knows in whom He has placed His Holy Spirit, and what stage of spiritual gestation they are in. As believers, we are to be known, not by our spiritual pride for all the glorious truths God has revealed to us, but by love. Like Paul, let us pray for those who are still partially blinded. Now, let us begin….
Satan’s Greatest Lie To The Church
Satan’s greatest lie is that God’s Torah is a curse, that God’s Torah opposes God’s grace, that God’s only begotten Son, Yeshua (Who said that His doctrine is His Father’s, and that He came only to do His Father’s will and speak His Father’s words), nailed His Father’s instructions, the Torah, to the cross.
Amos 3:7 informs us that Lord YHVH does NOTHING without first revealing it to His servants the prophets. So if YHVH, Who declares the end out of the beginning, planned to revoke His Torah (all those instructions He commanded us to keep and guard forever, so that it would go well with us), where are all the prophecies? Can you find even ONE that says the Torah will be done away with? No! Not one! In fact, all of the Prophets speak of a time when God’s people will finally keep His commandments and walk in His ways. God commands us hundreds of times throughout the Scriptures to guard and keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments. His TORAH is FOREVER. He commands us not to add to or take away from it. Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible has 176 verses (2,542 words). Every one of those 176 verses regales the greatness of God’s Torah and the blessing God bestows on those who love it.
TORAH: God’s Instructions
The Hebrew word “Torah”, derived from the three letter root ירה–in “hif’il”, means to guide or teach. Our Creator’s TORAH is our Creator’s INSTRUCTION manual, and Scripture tells us that when we walk in God’s ways we are blessed.
Deuteronomy 11:26-28 Behold! I set before you today a blessing and a curse: a blessing if you hear the commandments of Jehovah your God which I command you today; and a curse if you will not hear the commandments of Yehovah your God, but will turn aside out of the way which I command you today…
As Psalms 19:7-10 says: The Law of Yehovah is perfect, restoring (turning back to God) the soul. The Testimony of Yehovah is sure, making the simple wise. The precepts of Yehovah are right, rejoicing the heart. The commands of Yehovah are pure, giving light to the eyes. The fear of Yehovah is clean, enduring forever. The judgments of Yehovah are true, they are altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, much fine gold, and sweeter than honey from the honeycomb.
Psalms 119:160 says, “The sum of Your Word is true; every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” Now those who do not play fast and loose with God’s WORD know that God’s WORD includes His Instructions for living (His Torah). From cover to cover, Scripture declares that Yah’s Judgements, His Statutes, and His LAWS, ENDUR FOREVER, from everlasting to everlasting. And Yeshua, the WORD of God made flesh, is also the TORAH of God made Flesh.
The Torah Will Go Forth From Jerusalem!
YHVH declared through the prophet Isaiah that in the last days (during Yeshua’s millennial reign) the TORAH is going to be preached, not only to those living in the Promised Land, but to all nations. YHVH will teach all nations His ways, so that they will finally walk in His paths. Let’s read it!
Isaiah 2:2-3 And it shall be in the last days, the mountain of the house of Yehovah shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow into it. And many people shall go and say, Come and let us go up to the mount of Yehovah, to the house of the God of Jacob, and He will teach us His ways, and we will walk in His paths. For out of Zion the Law (the TORAH) will go forth, and the Word of Yehovah from Jerusalem.
Those who believe the TORAH was done away with don’t believe that God’s WORD has been done away with. WHY? Because they know that God’s WORD is eternal. Still, somehow they miss the fact (and I know I’m repeating myself, but it bears repeating) His LAWs are also His WORD. Yeshua is the WORD made flesh. He’s also the Torah made flesh.
Psalms 119:44 “I shall keep Your Law continually, forever and ever.”
Much of the confusion about the Torah being nailed to the cross comes, I believe, from the wording in the KJV: “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.”
Here it is again, this time from the NASB: “Having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which were hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” Clearly, all the charges against us for breaking God’s laws got taken out of the way and nailed to Yeshua’s cross. Why? Because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), but the gift of God is everlasting life in Messiah Yeshua.
God’s instructions, His Commandments, His TORAH–which Psalms 19:7 tells us is PERFECT, and which 1st John 5:3 says, “ARE NOT BURDENSOME”–were never nailed to the cross! It makes no sense to preach “repent from your sins” if the TORAH is no longer in effect.
1st John 3:4 tells us what sin is. It’s a violation of TORAH! Who would need to be saved from sin, a violation of Torah, if the Torah was done away with?
The Most High is not some liberal politician attempting to solve the drug problem by legalizing drugs! The Most High is righteous, and He NEVER changes. He did not do away with His “perfect” instructions! His ways are not our ways! We are the problem! So He changes us! He puts His Holy Spirit into those who put their faith/faithfulness into Yeshua. He does it so that we can chose to walk in His Spirit, which empowers us to fulfill the righteous requirements of His Torah. (Rom 8:4)
Psalms 119, the longest chapter in Psalms, is devoted entirely to praising the Law. In verse 18, David, a man after God’s own heart, asks God to open his eyes that he might see the wondrous things from God’s law. Psalms 119:142 says, “Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your law is truth.” James 4:12 says, “One is the Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy.”
Yeshua Had Much To Say About the LAW
Do not think that I came to annul the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to annul, but to fulfill. Truly I say to you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, in no way shall one iota or one point pass away from the Law until all comes to pass. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of these commandments the least and shall teach men so, he shall be called least in the kingdom of Heaven. But whoever does and teaches them, this one shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven.
Since heaven and earth are still here we can rest assured that not one iota or point has passed from the TORAH. Yeshua also said, “And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, those working lawlessness! (Matthew 7:23)
The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all that offends, and those who practice lawlessness. (Matthew 13:41)
If you love Me, keep My commandments. (John 14:15)
If you keep My commandments you will continue in My love, as I have kept My Father’s commandments and continue in His love. (John 15:10)
And just to be clear, in case someone might try to claim that Yeshua’s commandments are not the same ones given to Moses, remember that Yeshua also said in John 7:16 that His doctrine wasn’t His, but the One who sent Him (His Father).
PAUL & TORAH
Paul equated righteousness with light, and darkness with lawlessness, which he then connected with unbelief.
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership does righteousness have with lawlessness? And what fellowship does light have with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14)
YESHUA REDEEM US, Not From Torah,
Titus 2:14 “who gave Himself on our behalf that He might redeem us from all lawlessness and purify a special people for Himself, zealous of good works.” Chew on that verse for a while!
Hebrews 1:9: You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; because of this God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness beside Your fellows.”
In Romans 7:12, Paul calls the law and commandments holy, just, and good.
Romans 2:13 For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the LAW will be justified.
Romans 3:31 Then is the Law annulled through faith? Let it not be! But we establish Law.
And when Paul was accused in court of teaching against the Law (Acts 25:7-8), he said, “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I offended in anything…”
Paul’s statement in Romans 8:4 that, “the righteous demand of the Law (Torah) might be fulfilled in us, those not walking according to flesh, but according to Spirit,” should–just like Matthew 5:17-19–prove that God’s Torah is still in effect.
Whoever turns his ear away from hearing (shama/ which means both hear and obey) the Torah, even his prayer is an abomination.
SATAN IS THE LAWLESS ONE
The antichrist is often called the Lawless one. “And then the lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.” (2Th 2:8)
Revelations 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints; here are the ones keeping the commands of God and the faith of Yeshua.
I will close with this warning from Peter, who was speaking about some of Paul’s writings, in which he said, “…are some things hard to understand, which the unlearned and unsettled pervert…to their own destruction. Then beloved, you knowing beforehand, watch lest, being led away by the error of the lawless, you fall from your own steadfastness. (2nd Peter 3:16-17)
