Are You Abraham’s Seed?

by Christine Egbert

Galatians 3:29 declares, “If you are in Christ (the Messiah), then you are a seed of Abraham, even heirs according to promise.”

What was God’s promise to Abraham’s seed? The answer, as always, is found in Scripture.

Genesis 17:7-8 – And I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and your seed after you, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you and to your seed after you. And I will give to you and to your seed after you the land of your sojourning, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession and I will be their God.

Genesis 17:9 – And God said to Abraham, “You shall keep My covenant, you and your seed after you, in their generations!”

Exodos 24:3 – Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD (Yahweh) as well as all the ordinances. All the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the LORD (Yahweh) has spoken, we will do.”

In Messiah, we have become God’s people and are counted among those who stood at the base of the mountain and declared, “All that the LORD (Yahweh) has spoken, we will do!”

Deuteronomy 29:12-14 – This is in order to confirm you today as His people. He will be your God, just as He promised you and just as He swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. Not with you alone am I cutting this covenant and this oath, but with whomever is standing here with us today before the LORD (Yahweh) our God and with whomever is not here with us today.

In Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus), we are Abraham’s seed and no longer Gentiles. We are no longer excluded from Israel’s Commonwealth or excluded from God’s Covenants (plural).

Ephesians 2:11-13 – Keep in mind that once you—Gentiles in the flesh—were called “uncircumcision” by those called “circumcision” (which is performed on flesh by hand). At that time, you were separate from Messiah, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus (Messiah Yeshua), you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah.

Saved Through Faith

Keeping Torah does not save us. It never could. God’s Torah, His instructions, are given to teach us the difference between right and wrong. When we keep God’s Torah, when we walk in God’s ways, we are blessed.

Deuteronomy 11:26-28 – See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse—the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD (Yahweh) your God that I am commanding you today, but the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the LORD (Yahweh) your God, but turn from the way I am commanding you…

Psalms 19:7-8 – The Law of the LORD (Yahweh) is perfect, turning back the soul. The Testimony of the LORD (Yahweh) is sure, making the simple wise. The precepts of the LORD (Yahweh) are right, rejoicing the heart. The commands of the LORD (Yahweh) are pure, giving light to the eyes.

After Israel broke God’s Covenant, over and over again, God promised through His prophets that He would make a new covenant (renew the covenant) with the House of Israel and with the House of Judah. Only this time, He would write His Torah (His instructions) in their heart. He would give them a new Spirit, His Holy Spirt, so that this time, they would obey Him.

Romans 8:3-4 – For what was impossible for the Torah—since it was weakened on account of the flesh—God has done. Sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as a sin offering, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Torah might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Ezekiel 11:19-21 says this: “Then I will give them one heart. I will put a new Spirit within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, so that they may follow my Torah, keep my ordinances, and practice them. They will be My people and I will be their God. As for those whose heart walks after the heart of their detestable things and abominations, I will bring their ways upon their heads. It is a declaration of the LORD (Yahweh) God.
